Rain chain installation on a modern glass-facade commercial building with a landscaped interior courtyard

Can You Hang a Rain Chain Without a Gutter?

The short answer is yes — you can hang a rain chain even on a home without an eave trough. Once you understand how your roof drain and piping work, choosing the right hardware makes installation nearly as simple as on a home with a conventional eave trough.

What Is a Gutterless Home — and How Does It Handle Rain?

Homes with flat roofs, covered porches, or balconies often have no eave trough at all. Instead, they use a roof drain built into the roof surface, paired with a PVC pipe running directly below it to carry rainwater away. At first glance, there seems to be nowhere to hang a rain chain. But by working with that roof drain and pipe structure, you can install one beautifully — and the three solutions below show you exactly how.

3 Ways to Hang a Rain Chain Without Gutters

Here are three ways to hang a rain chain on a home without eave troughs. If your Gutter Outlet fits your roof drain, start with Solution 1 or Solution 2. If the sizes do not match, Solution 3 — which uses a Pipe Adapter — gives you a flexible alternative.

Solution 1: Thread the Rain Chain Through the Pipe (Standard Method)

This is the most straightforward way to drain rainwater from a flat roof or covered porch: thread the rain chain directly through the pipe below your roof drain.

How to Install
Thread the rain chain through the pipe directly below your roof drain. If your roof drain fits the Gutter Outlet, you can attach it the same way as on a home with a conventional eave trough — the steps are nearly identical. Be sure to secure the Gutter Outlet with caulk.

Key Advantage
Because the chain runs straight through the pipe, water flows down naturally and smoothly. When the pipe has enough clearance, this is the best place to start. See the table below for the maximum outer diameter of each rain chain and the minimum pipe inner diameter needed.

Product Max. Outer Diameter (Reference) Min. Recommended Inner Diameter (OD + 3/8 in.) Issue Solution
Hamon 1 7/8 in. (47.5 mm) 2 1/4 in. (57.5 mm) or larger
Toh 1 3/4 in. (45 mm) 2 3/16 in. (55 mm) or larger
Toh L 2 3/8 in. (60 mm) 2 3/4 in. (70 mm) or larger
Ta-ke 2 3/16 in. (55 mm) 2 9/16 in. (65 mm) or larger Included Gutter Outlet may not fit Use the Outlet Adapter (L Size) to adjust
Tama 2 5/16 in. (59 mm) 2 3/4 in. (69 mm) or larger Included Gutter Outlet may not fit Use the Outlet Adapter (L Size) to adjust
Tama L 3 1/8 in. (80 mm) 3 1/2 in. (90 mm) or larger Included Gutter Outlet may not fit Use the Outlet Adapter (L Size) to adjust — contact us for custom options

Note: When threading a rain chain through a pipe, the included Gutter Outlet may not fit for some models. Confirm compatibility before ordering.

If your roof drain fits the Gutter Outlet and the pipe's inner diameter is larger than the rain chain's outer diameter, Solution 1 is the right choice.

Solution 2: Use a Custom Gutter Outlet With an Extended Lower End

Use this solution when the existing pipe's inner diameter is smaller than the rain chain's outer diameter — meaning the chain cannot pass through. One condition applies: this method works only when the concrete slab at the installation point is 20 in. (500 mm) or less in thickness.

How to Install

Install a custom gutter outlet with an extended lower end. This piece catches rainwater and guides it onto the chain below. Be sure to secure the Gutter Outlet with caulk.

Key Advantage

Even when the pipe is too narrow to thread a chain through, a custom gutter outlet lets you install a rain chain cleanly — as long as the slab thickness condition is met.

For the installation video and chain outer-diameter table, see Solution 1.

Solution 3: Use a Pipe Adapter (Drainpipe Connector)

Use this solution when neither Solution 1 nor Solution 2 is possible. The Pipe Adapter — available in our online store — screws directly onto your existing drainage pipe and channels water down the rain chain.

How to Install
Purchase the Pipe Adapter from our store and screw it directly into the drainage pipe. Position the rain chain 3/16 in. to 3/8 in. (5–10 mm) below the adapter to reduce splashing.

Important Note
When water flows strongly from the adapter onto the chain, splash-back can wet the soffit above. If moisture damage is a concern, apply a metal sheet or waterproofing treatment to the underside of the concrete slab before installation.

Key Advantage
This method works regardless of roof drain size — there is no fit issue between the Gutter Outlet and the roof drain. Because the adapter screws directly to the pipe, you can set it up yourself without extensive prep work.

For compatible pipe sizes, see the product page link below.

FAQ

Can I Install a Rain Chain Without a Gutter Myself?

It depends on your setup. When your roof drain fits the Gutter Outlet, installation is fairly manageable on your own. However, if you need a custom fitting or waterproofing on the underside of the concrete slab — as in some Solution 3 setups — we recommend consulting a qualified professional.

Can I Use a Rain Chain With a Non-Standard Roof Drain?

In many cases, yes — even when the dimensions do not match exactly. Using an adapter, modifying the Gutter Outlet, or ordering a custom fitting can all solve the problem. Before you begin, confirm your roof drain's exact specifications and consult a qualified professional for the safest outcome.
