Rain Chain Freeze Prevention: Installation Tips for Cold Climates and Winter Care
“Is it safe to use a rain chain in cold climates?”
As winter approaches, this is one of the most common questions we receive from customers.
At SEO RAINCHAIN, we craft our rain chains in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, one of
Japan’s heaviest snowfall regions. In our city, snowfall can reach 50 cm, or 20 inches, overnight.
Here, we are not only artisans who craft rain chains, but also everyday users of our own
products.
What really happens to rain chains during winter in snowy regions? Based on our firsthand
experience, we would like to share what actually occurs and how to handle it.
Winter in Takaoka City, Toyama, Our Home
Takaoka City, our home, lies along the Sea of Japan and is known for its wet, heavy snowfall.
According to data from the Japan Meteorological Agency (Fushiki Observatory, 1991 to 2020 averages):
- Annual snowfall: 232 cm, or 91.3 inches (average year)
- Average minimum temperature in January: 0.1°C (nighttime temperatures regularly fall below freezing)
The daily cycle of thawing and refreezing, caused by temperature differences between day and night, leads to the formation of icicles on rain chains.
About the “Ice Sculptures” and the Load on Rain Chains

During the nighttime, when temperatures drop, the water running down the chain gradually freezes and can form an icicle stretching from top to bottom. This creates a beautiful “ice sculpture” that can only be seen in cold regions.
As shown in the photo, when the icicle extends all the way to the ground, it may look as though the column of ice is supporting the weight. However, in reality, it should be understood that a considerable load is being placed on the horizontal section of the eaves drainage system.
Do Rain Chains Hold Up in Freezing Conditions?
Having lived in this region myself, I have never experienced any maintenance issues or damage caused by freezing. I have also never removed our rain chains for the winter. Furthermore, we have not received a single report of damage from customers in even colder regions where our products have been installed.
We believe there are two main reasons for this:
-
Cold-Climate Installation Standards:
In snowy regions, the brackets (supports) for the horizontal gutter are installed at closer intervals from the outset, providing greater overall strength. -
Appropriate Length:
With a typical residential length (approximately 3 meters), the weight of accumulated ice remains within the allowable load capacity of the reinforced horizontal gutter.
Three Tips for Peace of Mind During Winter

While we have not experienced any major problems, we recommend the following preparations to ensure safe and long-term use:
Clean Before the Snow Falls
If leaves or debris clog the rain chain, water may overflow and form unexpected ice buildup in unintended areas. Before the first snowfall, it is advisable to ensure that water can flow freely.
Remove During Winter If You Have Concerns
In regions with particularly heavy snowfall, or if you have concerns about the strength of the eaves, removing the chain for the winter is one option. Seo Rain Chain products feature a simple joint structure, making them relatively easy to detach and reinstall.
Exercise Caution with Longer Chains
The longer the rain chain, the larger the ice columns may become, increasing the load. In cold climates, we recommend avoiding installations that significantly exceed the typical residential first-floor length of around 3 meters, taking maintenance considerations into account.
This morning, as I looked outside from indoors, I saw the rain chain transformed by the winter cold, encased in delicate ice. Inspired by that quiet, striking scene, I felt compelled to write this article.
Because we live in a snowy region ourselves, we understand not only the unique beauty that emerges from this environment, but also the points that require careful attention when using our products in such conditions.
We hope this information will be helpful as you plan your installation!
